Day 15 - St. Johns

I am getting confirmed into the Catholic church tonight, during the Easter Vigil mass, but I'll talk about that more in the post for Day 14. Today I want to talk about St. John's church, where I'll be attending the Easter Vigil mass.

St. John's is located in Portsmouth, about a 10-15 minute walk from my apartment. The church, except for the altar, was completely devastated during an earthquake in 2004. You can see pictures of the original church and the destruction here. The altar still stands, and I want to share a picture I took of it this morning. Its amazing how something so beautiful stands and remains in tact in the midst of so much destruction. Today church is held in a temporary building, until the church is rebuilt. As of right now, the church has raised approximately 1 million EC towards rebuilding the church, but a project of this size will cost around 1 million US.
