Saturday is my favorite day of the week since we moved out here. Yes, its the weekend, which is nice in its own way, but weekdays and weekends tend to blend together - with Blake studying everyday and me usually working through the weekend so I can have more flexible workdays throughout the week.
Then why is Saturday my favorite?
I like all the options I have to be an active part of the community on Saturdays. The nearest town, Portsmouth, has a market on Saturday mornings, where you can get all kinds of fresh produce for a good price. You have to wake up early, and get to the market no later than 6:30 - 7 am, if you don't want the picked over goods, and even earlier, if you are looking for eggs. Now, the market isn't as necessary today as it was a year ago, because we have a grocery store in Picard now, but I still enjoy going, seeing the local farmers, and supporting them.
Next comes yoga. Every Saturday morning three yoga classes are offered - Beginning, Intermediate, and Cardio Flow. Each is an hour and a half long, so I really can only make it through one - so I usually choose Intermediate. Yoga class is taught on a seaside deck, and you can hear the waves crash upon the rocks beneath, then slowly ripple back into the ocean. Its relaxing and rejuvenating.
Ok, market and yoga. Now its around noon - grocery shopping at IGA and lunch time.
IGA doesn't restock their shelves overnight, or on a daily basis, like we are used to in the states. Typically they restock Fri morning and Sat morning, which means the best groceries and stocked shelves are on Saturdays. So I go grocery shopping...which is a treat because you never know what surprises you will find...then go home and have lunch.
If its a nice day, this is the point where I go to the pool on campus for a few hours, or if it isn't a nice day - I'll catch up on some work or I'll read for awhile.
No huge events, but this is island life. It doesn't mean that I religiously go to the market or yoga every single Saturday, but its just nice to have these things to look forward to on a weekly basis.
