Day 28 - Scuba

Blake went on a lion fish hunt today with the scuba club. (I am in a 9 month diving hiatus because of the pregnancy). Lion fish are these pesky little creatures that have recently come to the Caribbean. They have no natural predators in these waters, and they are dangerous to the ecosystem. As a result, the scuba club has been making an effort to kill as many as possible, and today they had a special dive and lion fish bbq.

Scuba has become a common hobby for me and Blake. We got open water certified during the break between semesters one and two, advanced certified a few months later, and Blake just finished up his rescue diver certification. Blake has a GoPro camera that he straps onto his head during dives, so we always get pretty good video footage of our trips. We have been to most of the dive sites in Dominica and 6 of the sites in St. Lucia. I think I have logged around 30 dives and Blake's logged somewhere around 50 dives now.

I think my favorite dive so far was the night dive at Cabrits. My dad was visiting, it was completely dark other than the full moon, and we were able to see the bio-luminescence and feed an anemone. The same dive sight that you may have visited 5 times is completely different at night than during the day, and it was amazing to witness it.

The ease of going scuba diving will definitely be something that we miss when we are back in the states. Right now, all it takes is a 15 minute walk from our apartment to the dive shop, about 20 minutes gathering equipment, and a 5 minute drive to the boat dock to get to go on some pretty nice dives. We have a pretty fun group of friends that go diving with us, and we will miss our little diving community.

I see many dive vacations in our future though, and thats an exciting thought!

in St. Lucia.
