It seems like everyone is ultra-dependent on technology these days, and although I would like to say that living in the nature-isle changed that for me, it actually made it worse. Although I'm not as hooked to my iPhone as I used to be, technology can either make or break my day, in very dramatic ways.
Case in Point # 1 - My computer crashed at the beginning of third semester. I was working one 30-hr a week job at the time, and had no computer...for an entire month. I called Dell and tried to figure something out with repairing it, but the only thing that was feasible was to buy a new computer online and have a friend who was off-island bring one back to me when she came back to Dominica. That meant waking up at 4 am to use Blake's computer for 4 hours (4-8 am), while he wasn't using it, so I could use my statistics program, then going up to campus and using the computer lab, logging into Blake's name since spouses don't get log-in access, and writing up my reports and projects there. It was an awful month.
Case in Point # 2 - Skype saves my life on a weekly basis. I love having Skype dates with friends and catching up on their lives. We email too, but seeing each other makes me feel like I'm not sooooooooo far away...well...until the internet OR the power goes out while I am in the middle of the Skype date. Which happened yesterday. In mid-sentence, my friends face completely froze, the lights turned off, and I was all alone...for two hours.
I will relish the day when I have a work meeting and I don't have to call in multiple times because of the internet going out, or going too slow, or people being able to hear goats or chickens from outside my window louder than they can hear me.
