At the request of one bossy red head...I am updating my blog..you know who you are! :) jussstttt kidding!
First, let me apologize if I am not explaining this correctly, this is just my view of the Carnival events in Dominica. Basically, each town has a festival and parade celebrating Carnival, where the local beauty queen and Calypso finalist are displayed, bands play in the streets, and there is a ton of drinking and dancing. On the Monday and Tuesday (Fat Tues) before Ash Wednesday, a big Carnival festival is held in the capital, where the final beauty pageant is conducted for "Miss Dominica", the Calypso "king" is determined, and there is more music, crazy costumes, dancing, drinking, and parades. The Calypso king is a contest for young men, where each contestant creates a political slogan or saying and sings it to the crowds/ judges. I think the university frowns upon students attending the main events, because they typically schedule tests the day after the festivities. We attended the celebration in Portsmouth, a town about 2 miles north of our apartment.
